An Australian man has been jailed in Singapore after causing a disturbance at the Asian premiere of Wicked: For Good, where Ariana Grande was making an appearance.

The man, identified as 26-year-old Johnson Wen, received a nine-day prison term for creating a public nuisance. The sentencing follows an incident that circulated widely online, showing a man breaking through crowd barriers and lunging towards Grande as she arrived on the green carpet.

Footage captured the singer recoiling in shock as Wen grabbed her by the shoulders and jumped in front of her. Cynthia Erivo, Grande’s co-star in the upcoming film, intervened by pulling him away before security staff removed him.

Authorities later revealed that Wen had attempted to get close to the cast twice. After being escorted out the first time, he reportedly tried to climb the barricades again, prompting staff to physically restrain him.

The episode sparked widespread anger in Singapore, with many calling for firm action. Social media users noted that Grande has spoken openly about her trauma following the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing, saying the confrontation could have been distressing for her.

Wen posted clips of the encounter on his social media accounts shortly after the premiere, portraying the moment in a celebratory tone. Police arrested him the following day.

Prosecutors described Wen as someone who repeatedly disrupts major events for online attention and pushed for a week-long sentence. Reports in Australia say he has previously run onto sports grounds and interrupted shows by performers including Katy Perry and The Weeknd, resulting in several fines and venue bans.

Wen represented himself in court and told the judge he did not intend to repeat the behaviour. Singapore’s public nuisance laws allow for a sentence of up to three months or a fine that can reach S$2,000.

Grande has not addressed the incident publicly. Erivo later hinted at the turmoil while discussing her bond with Grande during filming, saying the two had “come through some stuff” and suggesting the chaotic premiere had not gone unnoticed.
