WEB DESK: Criticism on police forces aside, popular American sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine won hearts of many viewers willing to separate their politics from fiction. But now a potential Indian adaptation of the same reportedly in early development, with actor Kunal Kemmu being considered for the lead role, according to Live Mint. However, no official confirmations have been made yet.
The original series, which ran for eight seasons, centered on the humorous yet efficient detectives of Brooklyn’s fictional 99th precinct, led by Andy Samberg’s beloved character, Jake Peralta. The show gained acclaim for its sharp comedy and thoughtful handling of social issues.
Sources cited in the report suggest that discussions about an Indian remake are still in preliminary stages. “The makers are keen on adapting the series, but nothing has been finalised. They are currently exploring potential platforms for the project,” the report stated.

Speculation around Kemmu’s casting as the Indian version of Jake Peralta has gained traction online, given his established comedic talent in films like Go Goa Gone and the Golmaal series. However, while Kemmu’s name has been discussed internally, no formal talks have taken place with the actor.
“The idea of Kemmu playing Peralta is purely speculative at this stage. The team has not approached him yet,” it was said.
The project is said to be in its earliest phases, with a pilot script reportedly written and character adaptations being explored for an Indian context. Given the current stage of development, if greenlit, the show may take over a year to reach audiences.
Fans of the original series have expressed both excitement and caution, hoping that any adaptation retains the charm and wit of Brooklyn Nine-Nine while incorporating local sensibilities.
For now, official announcements regarding casting, platform, or production timelines remain pending.
