The Met Gala has confirmed its theme for 2026, announcing ‘Costume as Art’ as the creative direction for next year’s event. The concept places fashion within the world of visual art, spotlighting craftsmanship, structure and imaginative design.
The theme invites designers and guests to go beyond traditional silhouettes and explore more conceptual approaches, drawing on historical references, unusual materials and sculptural forms. It encourages interpretations that prioritise creativity and storytelling rather than conventional red carpet glamour.
With the announcement now public, early conversation has turned to how well-known Met Gala figures might respond to the brief. Kim Kardashian, whose sculptural Balenciaga looks and Thierry Mugler’s intricately constructed “wet look” gown remain some of the event’s most discussed moments, is once again at the centre of fan speculation. Lana Del Rey’s ornate 2024 return, complete with a branch-inspired headpiece and veiled detailing, is also being revisited as an example of how guests might embrace an art-driven theme.
Rising style favourite Doechii, recognised for bold silhouettes and experimental textures, along with Bad Bunny, whose menswear choices often challenge traditional boundaries, are also expected to attract attention should they attend. Their past red carpet appearances suggest strong potential for inventive interpretations of a theme focused on costume as creative expression.
The accompanying exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute will expand on this direction, presenting garments that showcase innovative construction, narrative detail and craftsmanship. More information, including the gala’s hosts and confirmed attendees, is expected to be announced nearer to the event.
The 2026 Met Gala is scheduled to take place in early May, continuing its legacy as the most influential night in celebrity fashion.
