Scarlett Johansson is set to take on a new role in the horror genre after signing on to star in an upcoming film set within The Exorcist universe.

The project is being developed by Blumhouse in partnership with Atomic Monster and Universal Pictures. It will be written and directed by Mike Flanagan and is described as a fresh, original entry rather than a direct sequel to 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer.

Johansson, widely recognised for her role as Natasha Romanoff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and for her work across drama and science fiction, is making a notable shift into supernatural horror with this project. Her casting marks a significant moment for the long-running franchise, which has spanned more than five decades.

While plot details remain under wraps, production is expected to begin in New York City. An official release date has not yet been announced.

The Exorcist franchise has seen renewed attention in recent years as studios attempt to reintroduce the classic horror property to modern audiences. With Flanagan’s involvement and Johansson attached as the lead, the new film signals a creative reset and a fresh approach to the iconic story world.

More information, including character details and additional casting, is expected to be revealed in the coming months.
