Actress Brigitte Bardot, known for ‘And God Created Woman,’ dies at 91

PARIS: Global cultural icon Brigitte Bardot, who was known for “And God Created Woman,” died here aged 91, the Fondation Brigitte Bardot said in a statement on Sunday.

“The Brigitte Bardot Foundation announces with great sadness the death of its founder and president, Brigitte Bardot, a world-renowned actress and singer who chose to give up her prestigious career to devote her life and energy to defending animals and her foundation.”

Often referred to by her initials B.B, was a versatile icon who not only contributed to the French entertainment industry by playing her role in different movies but also shaped it by singing as well as modelling.

The 91-year-old icon caught global attention when she was just 15 years old, appearing as a fashion model on the cover of Elle magazine in 1950.

Famous for portraying characters with hedonistic lives, she was one of the best-known symbols of the sexual revolution, according to her fans.

Claire Schub, who teaches French literature and film at Tufts University, said that Bardot’s look was copied by women around the world. He added, “Her fashion choices, her hair, her makeup, her pout … She became this icon, this legend, all over the globe.”
