Amazon launches Alexa+ in Canada with smarter, more natural voice features

ISLAMABAD: Amazon has launched its next-generation digital assistant, Alexa+, in Canada — making it the first country outside the United States to receive the upgraded version. The new assistant, which introduced neutral-language support earlier this year, now brings more natural, conversational interactions along with improved home-control features.

At the centre of Alexa+ is its ability to understand everyday language instead of fixed commands. Amazon says phrases like “I’m cold” can automatically prompt the heating system to turn up, while saying “It’s dark” can switch on connected lights. The feature builds on the US version but has been refined for Canadian users.

Canada Alexa Manager Allison Siperco said the assistant has been trained to understand Canadian culture, regional expressions and local interests — from hockey teams to homegrown musicians — helping Alexa+ deliver more relevant and relatable responses.

The upgraded assistant also adds new services. Users can make restaurant reservations through OpenTable simply by asking, while integration with CBC News offers real-time updates on local and national stories. Alexa+ further supports browsing and buying products on Canadian e-commerce platforms, making online shopping more seamless.

Amazon says more integrations are coming soon. Siperco confirmed upcoming support for Suno, Uber Eats, Yelp and TripAdvisor — enabling restaurant reviews, food delivery orders, AI-generated music and travel planning through simple voice commands.

With its broader capabilities and deeper cultural understanding, Alexa+ brings Canadian users a more intuitive and personalised digital assistant experience.
