LONDON: Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has said a T-shirt stunt by Kobbie Mainoo’s half-brother will not influence his team selection ahead of Sunday’s Premier League trip to Aston Villa.
Mainoo, an England international, is yet to make his first league start of the season, and his limited game time has been widely discussed. The 20-year-old’s half-brother, Jordan Mainoo-Hames, attracted attention on Monday by wearing a “Free Kobbie Mainoo” T-shirt during United’s 4-4 draw with Bournemouth.
Mainoo, who received a warm reception from fans after coming on as a substitute, had a loan request rejected in August, and speculation continues about a potential January move.
Speaking at Friday’s press conference, Amorim said the T-shirt would not affect his decisions. Mainoo remains an option in midfield, particularly in the absence of suspended Casemiro.
“It was not Kobbie who wore the T-shirt,” Amorim said. “He will not start because of the T-shirt, but he will not be left out either. He will play if we feel he is the right choice. This is not an issue. I’m used to this, and we have to deal with it. I will not take any action against Kobbie because of something a family member has done.”
Amorim also responded to comments by former manager Alex Ferguson, who suggested it could take another decade for United to win the Premier League.
“He understands football more than me, especially English football,” Amorim said. “I believe we will fight for the title in the coming years. It may not take as long as he suggested, but you never know.”
United currently sit sixth in the Premier League table ahead of their trip to third-placed Villa. Defenders Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire remain sidelined, while Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo are on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations.
