Apple’s iOS 27 set to polish iPhone software while adding smart AI features

Apple is expected to shift its focus from flashy new features to improving the overall quality and performance of its software with the upcoming iOS 27 and macOS 27 updates, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

In his Power On newsletter, Gurman compared the planned update to Mac OS X Snow Leopard, which prioritised stability and performance over new additions.

Gurman noted that while iOS 27 will largely concentrate on refining the system, users can still expect some notable new features, particularly in artificial intelligence. The update is expected to expand AI capabilities across Apple apps and introduce a Health+ subscription service offering personalised health insights and recommendations.

The move comes after Apple’s extensive redesign with the Liquid Glass interface and a string of feature-heavy releases over the past two years, which left some users frustrated with software quality. iOS 27 and macOS 27 are expected to address these concerns by targeting bugs, eliminating system bloat, and boosting overall performance.

For the first time since iOS 12, Apple appears to be prioritising stability over quantity. Gurman said that engineers are combing through Apple’s operating systems to improve performance and lay the groundwork for future hardware, including potential foldable iPhones.

Despite this focus on refinement, Apple will introduce a handful of new AI features. Rumoured highlights include an AI-powered health agent, a potential Apple Health+ subscription, and the company’s first AI-assisted web search tool. These enhancements will follow the AI-infused Siri debuting in iOS 26.4, which is reportedly powered by a custom version of Google’s Gemini model designed for Apple’s private cloud.

Gurman also pointed out that iOS 27 will bring improvements for enterprise users, tailored features for emerging markets, and minor adjustments to the Liquid Glass interface.

The first beta versions of iOS 27, macOS 27, and other updates are expected to arrive shortly after Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference next June. For many Apple fans, this update promises the long-awaited polish and reliability that has been missing in recent years.
