Diplomat Rafeeuddin Ahmed passes away, Asim Iftikhar pays tribute

NEW YORK: Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, on Sunday expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Rafeeuddin Ahmed, a distinguished Pakistani diplomat and former senior United Nations official, describing his death as a great loss for both Pakistan and the international community.

In a message shared on social media, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar paid tribute to Ahmed’s long and illustrious career in public service, highlighting his prominent role in international diplomacy.

Rafeeuddin Ahmed served the United Nations with distinction in several high-level positions, including as Under-Secretary-General. He also held key responsibilities as Chef de Cabinet to the UN Secretary-General, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), and in various assignments as Special Envoy and Representative of the Secretary-General.

“Rafeeuddin Ahmed was a leading figure in multilateral diplomacy,” Ambassador Asim Iftikhar said, noting that his contributions left behind a rich legacy that will continue to inspire young diplomats around the world.

Calling his demise a profound loss for Pakistan and the United Nations, the ambassador extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, as well as to Ahmed’s friends and colleagues across the globe.

“May the departed soul rest in peace in Jannah. Ameen,” he added.

Rafeeuddin Ahmed is remembered for his dedication to multilateralism, diplomacy, and public service, and for representing Pakistan with honor on the world stage.
