ISLAMABAD: Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal (FM) Syed Asim Munir, delivered an address at the National Ulema Mashaikh Conference held in Islamabad today. The conference saw the participation of scholars and Mashaikhs from all schools of thought across the country.

In his address, Field Marshal Munir spoke at length on a range of pressing issues facing Pakistan, including terrorism, national security challenges, the country’s emerging role on the global stage, and the importance of preparedness and knowledge.

Drawing on verses from the Holy Quran and classical poetry, he spoke on Pakistan’s distinct position and responsibilities in the Islamic world.

“Allah Almighty has bestowed upon Pakistan the honor of being the guardian of the two holy mosques,” he said, highlighting the deep connection between the State of Tayyiba (Saudi Arabia) and Pakistan. He noted that both states were established in the blessed month of Ramadan on the principles of divine guidance, and that their shared mission reinforces Pakistan’s pivotal role in the Muslim world.

Field Marshal Munir reflected on past military operations, citing Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos as an example of divine support in times of national crisis. He accentuated that in any Islamic state, only the state has the authority to issue orders or fatwas related to jihad.

Addressing regional security concerns, he warned that terrorist elements operating with support from the Afghan Taliban continue to target innocent Pakistani citizens and children. He stated that approximately 70 per cent of the Fitna al-Khawarij formations originating from Afghanistan consist of Afghan nationals, and stressed that Afghanistan must choose between aligning with these extremist forces or supporting Pakistan.

Field Marshal concluded by reiterating the importance of intellectual and cultural heritage, with a couplet of Allama Iqbal, noting that nations that abandon the wisdom and knowledge of their ancestors, as well as the power of the pen, risk falling into misery.

The conference served as a platform for reinforcing the bond between Pakistan’s military leadership and religious scholars, highlighting shared responsibilities toward national security, Islamic solidarity, and the protection of future generations.
