WEB DESK: British publication, the Financial Times, has described Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, as a skilled practitioner of multi-aligned foreign policy, saying he has emerged as an effective strategic leader amid a rapidly changing global order.
According to the newspaper, shifting international dynamics have ushered in a complex and demanding phase for so-called “middle powers”, making diplomacy increasingly challenging. In this environment, the Financial Times noted, Field Marshal Asim Munir stands out as one of the most successful examples of multi-alignment among middle-power states.
The report said the field marshal has demonstrated a rare ability to navigate competing global interests, particularly through improved coordination with former US president Donald Trump. It described him as a clear illustration of successful multi-vector diplomacy, adding that Pakistan’s leadership has remained actively engaged with Washington, Beijing, Riyadh and Tehran simultaneously.
The paper observed that under Field Marshal Munir’s stewardship, Pakistan has identified and leveraged new diplomatic opportunities, advancing its foreign policy effectively in line with evolving global realities. His timely engagement, measured rhetoric and flexible diplomatic approach, including with Trump, were described as particularly effective.
The Financial Times also noted that Pakistan’s diplomatic gains have caused frustration in India, where efforts to operate as a middle power have proven more difficult than anticipated. The paper said India struggled to adapt to changing global conditions and Trump’s political style, resulting in setbacks in its middle-power strategy.
