With the iPhone 17 priced high in Pakistan, many buyers are turning their attention to the iPhone 16. Some opt for models that are already PTA approved, while others buy non-PTA versions hoping to get them approved later.
The iPhone 16 is seen as a practical alternative, offering strong camera performance and impressive specifications. For many users, the differences between the iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 series are not significant enough to justify the higher cost.
Latest PTA registration charges for iPhone 16 models
PTA approval fees vary depending on the model and whether you register your device using a Passport or CNIC.
| Model | PTA approval via Passport | PTA approval via CNIC |
| iPhone 16 | Rs128,766 | Rs154,293 |
| iPhone 16 Plus | Rs135,322 | Rs161,949 |
| iPhone 16 Pro | Rs168,789 | Rs198,317 |
| iPhone 16 Pro Max | Rs182,710 | Rs213,631 |
These fees remain the same regardless of storage, from 256GB to 2TB. Only higher storage variants may slightly differ in cost.
Why PTA approval matters
Getting your iPhone PTA approved is essential if you want to use a SIM card in Pakistan. Non-PTA approved iPhones cannot make or receive calls, send messages, or access mobile data.
The charges often referred to as PTA taxes are not actually set by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority. PTA only provides the platform to pay the tax, which is determined and collected by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).
Should you buy a non-PTA iPhone 16?
Currently, a non-PTA iPhone 16 Pro Max costs around Rs310,000 in Pakistan. If you later pay the PTA tax to get it approved, the total cost rises to about Rs492,710. This is significantly higher than buying a model that is already PTA approved.
For comparison, the already PTA approved iPhone 16 Pro Max 256GB is selling for Rs450,000, making it a more economical choice for buyers who want to avoid extra charges. Despite this, budget-conscious users sometimes choose non-PTA devices, accepting the higher eventual cost to spread out their spending.
PTA tax revision remain uncertain
There have been reports suggesting that PTA may lower or remove taxes on smartphones. However, no official announcements have been made, despite interest from the public, senators, and PTA itself. For now, the existing PTA charges remain in place for the iPhone 16 series.
You can check the PTA tax status of your mobile device by entering its IMEI on the PTA DIRBS website, sending the IMEI via SMS to 8484, or using the DIRBS Pakistan mobile app.
