Huawei launches Mate 80 series with record-bright Pro Max display

Huawei Mate 80 Pro Max

Huawei has unveiled its latest Mate 80 series in China, led by the high-end Mate 80 Pro Max, which features a standout dual-layer OLED display capable of reaching a staggering 8,000 nits of peak brightness. The launch also introduced a new Mate X7 foldable phone boasting enhanced dust and water protection.

A screen built for the sunniest days

The Mate 80 Pro Max sports a 6.9-inch flat OLED screen, making it one of the brightest displays on the market. By comparison, Realme’s GT 8 Pro peaks at 7,000 nits and Google’s Pixel 10 Pro reaches 3,300 nits.

While these peak brightness figures are measured under specific conditions and may not reflect everyday use, Huawei promises the display will perform exceptionally well outdoors. The company also highlighted the panel’s high contrast, which should improve visibility and image clarity.

All four Mate 80 models feature squared-off sides and flat screens, continuing a design trend adopted by most phone makers. The rear design is eye-catching, with a circular pattern around the wireless charging coil that aligns with the round camera module to create a subtle “eight” motif.

Power, performance, and cameras

Huawei’s own Kirin chips power the Mate 80 phones, with RAM reaching up to 20GB in the Mate 80 RS Ultimate Design, a variant of the Pro Max with extra design touches. Despite the high-end specifications, the Pro Max carries a relatively modest 6,000mAh battery, smaller than some domestic rivals. Camera features remain a major selling point, with dual periscope lenses on the top model and support for a detachable telephoto extender.

Foldable joins the lineup

The new Mate X7 foldable also received a major upgrade. Its IP58 and IP59 dust and water protection bring it close to the IP68 standard seen in rivals like the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Huawei has added a larger 5,600mAh battery, bigger displays, and improvements to the chipset and camera system, positioning it as a serious competitor in the foldable market.

The Mate 80 series and Mate X7 are part of a broader product push from Huawei, which also unveiled new smartwatches, tablets, laptops, earbuds, TVs, and routers. For now, all products are exclusive to China, though limited international launches could follow.
