Kolkata: Chaos erupted at Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday as thousands of frustrated fans reacted angrily after football superstar Lionel Messi left the arena earlier than expected during his India tour.
The Argentina and Inter Miami forward, who is on a promotional “GOAT Tour” across Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi, had been greeted by cheering crowds waving Argentine flags and wearing Messi jerseys. Tickets for the event reportedly cost up to 12,000 rupees ($133), with many fans spending weeks’ salaries to catch a glimpse of the football legend.

Fans’ excitement quickly turned to frustration when Messi emerged to walk around the pitch, only to be largely hidden by a large entourage of officials and celebrities. Security whisked him away after just 20 minutes, preventing fans from getting a close look.
Angered by the abrupt exit, spectators began ripping out stadium seats, throwing water bottles and other items onto the track, and vandalising banners and tents. Many stormed the pitch, creating a scene of chaos and destruction.

“For me, to watch Messi is a pleasure, a dream. But I have missed the chance to have a glimpse because of the mismanagement in the stadium,” said businessman Nabin Chatterjee. Another fan, Ajay Shah, added, “I paid 5,000 rupees ($55) for the ticket and came with my son to watch Messi, not politicians. The police and military personnel were taking selfies. The management is to blame.”
Before the incident, Messi had unveiled a 21-metre statue showing him holding aloft the World Cup trophy. He was also expected to play a short exhibition game, which did not take place due to the early exit.

Authorities have taken action against the organisers. Javed Shamim, a senior police official in West Bengal, confirmed that the “chief organiser” had been arrested. State Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her shock at the mismanagement and apologised to Messi and his fans. She said a full probe has been ordered to address the incident and look into refunding tickets.
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) clarified that it had no involvement in the private event, stating that it had not been informed or consulted about the organisation or execution of the tour.

Messi will continue his tour in Hyderabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi. His visit may also include a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The footballer, who recently won his second consecutive Major League Soccer Most Valuable Player award after leading Inter Miami to the MLS title, is set to defend Argentina’s World Cup title in North America this June and July.
