ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has strongly rejected Israel’s recent recognition of Somaliland as an independent state, calling the move a violation of international law that threatens regional stability. Pakistan has also reiterated its support for Somalia’s territorial integrity.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andrabi said Islamabad “strongly condemns any attempt to undermine the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of Somalia.” He described Israel’s action as “illegal and provocative,” warning that it could destabilise not only Somalia but the broader Horn of Africa region.
“Such actions undermine ongoing efforts for peace and stability in the wider region,” Andrabi said, urging the international community to reject Israel’s decision. He reiterated Pakistan’s support for all initiatives aimed at achieving lasting peace while safeguarding Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
JOINT INTERNATIONAL STATEMENT
Pakistan’s stance aligns with a broader statement issued by the Foreign Ministers of 22 countries and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), including Jordan, Egypt, Algeria, Comoros, Djibouti, Gambia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Maldives, Nigeria, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Türkiye, and Yemen.
The joint statement condemned Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, accentuating that it constitutes a serious violation of international law and the United Nations Charter. The ministers warned that recognizing parts of sovereign states sets a dangerous precedent that could threaten global peace and security.
The statement reaffirmed full support for Somalia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, rejecting any measures that could undermine the unity of the country. It also highlighted that such unilateral recognition by Israel could not be linked to attempts to displace the Palestinian people, which the ministers categorically rejected.
This coordinated response underscores a unified position from Pakistan and its allies in defense of Somalia’s sovereignty and the principles of international law.
