LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to begin a comprehensive renovation and remodelling of Karachi’s National Stadium, with construction work expected to formally start next month, sources revealed.
According to sources, all old spectator stands at the historic venue will be demolished and rebuilt under a modern design. The iron grills currently installed around the stands will also be removed to improve visibility and enhance the overall viewing experience for fans.
The redesigned enclosures of the National Stadium will follow an architectural layout similar to Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium. However, the installation of roofing structures at Gaddafi Stadium will be carried out at a later stage, the sources added.
In addition to Karachi’s redevelopment, the PCB is also working with the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to construct a new cricket stadium in Islamabad. The administrative control of the Islamabad stadium will rest with the CDA, while the PCB will retain the right to host both international and domestic matches at the facility.
The board had previously allocated Rs18 billion for the upgradation of cricket stadiums in Lahore, Karachi and Rawalpindi. In the first phase, around Rs10.5 billion has already been utilised on construction and infrastructure improvements.
Earlier this year in February, National Stadium witnessed renovations and was inaugurated on with a grand fireworks display. Upgrades included modern dressing rooms, two digital replay screens, 350 LED lights to enhance broadcast quality, and over 5,000 additional seats. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi said the main building was completed in under four months, crediting workers who laboured tirelessly. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah had also praised the renovation and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to promoting sports and improving facilities across Karachi.
The PCB’s large-scale redevelopment drive aims to bring Pakistan’s major cricket venues in line with international standards, ahead of future ICC events and expanded domestic competitions.
