ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has taken a major step toward the launch of 5G services as the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued comprehensive security guidelines aimed at ensuring the safe deployment and efficient operation of 5G networks across the country.
According to the PTA, the guidelines are designed to protect user data and safeguard the national telecommunications infrastructure, while aligning Pakistan’s 5G framework with international security standards. The authority noted that 5G technology is critical not only for technological advancement but also for national security and economic stability.
The PTA noted that the cloud-based and virtualised architecture of 5G networks increases vulnerability to cyberattacks, making strict security measures essential. To address these risks, the guidelines include mechanisms to prevent roaming fraud and fake network registrations through home network-controlled authentication.
PTA also noted that end-user devices and edge computing infrastructure are among the most vulnerable components of 5G networks. It warned that attacks on the core network could disrupt authentication processes, session management, and even national-level communications.
To counter these threats, the PTA has made special measures mandatory to protect user privacy. The guidelines require continuous authentication of every user and device under a Zero Trust security model, along with the implementation of strong cryptographic standards across all 5G networks.
The federal government has set a target to launch 5G services by March 2026. Industry experts view the issuance of these security guidelines ahead of the rollout as a timely and significant move, laying a strong foundation for the secure introduction of next-generation mobile services in Pakistan.
