JOHANNESBURG: At least 10 people were shot dead and another 10 injured in a deadly mass shooting attack in a township outside Johannesburg, marking South Africa’s second mass shooting this month, police said on Sunday.
The shooting occurred in Bekkersdal, about 40 kilometres southwest of Johannesburg, international media reported. Authorities said the attackers have not been identified and the motive for the violence remains unknown.
Police reported that several victims were shot at random while walking in the street. “Ten people have been confirmed dead, but we do not yet have details on their identities,” said Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili.
The attack took place near an informal drinking spot in Bekkersdal, a poor community located close to some of the country’s largest gold mines. Those who survived the shooting were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The incident follows another mass killing earlier this month near Pretoria, where gunmen opened fire inside a hostel in Saulsville township. That attack left 12 people dead, including a three-year-old child, and injured more than a dozen others. Police said the shooting may have been linked to an illegal bar operating inside the hostel, and a manhunt was launched for three suspects.
South Africa continues to struggle with high levels of violent crime. With widespread gun ownership and ongoing problems linked to illegal alcohol outlets, shootings remain common. Police statistics show that between April and September this year, more than 60 people were killed every day nationwide.
Authorities say investigations into both attacks are ongoing.
