Guwahati witnessed a commanding display of cricket as South Africa humbled India on home soil, securing a record 408-run victory in the second Test and completing a 2-0 series whitewash.
The win marks South Africa’s first Test series triumph in India in 25 years and a significant milestone for skipper Temba Bavuma, who remains unbeaten as Test captain and joins Hansie Cronje as only the second South African leader to conquer India in their own backyard.
Chasing an imposing target of 549, India resumed on 27/2 but were quickly undone by Simon Harmer. The off-spinner dismissed nightwatchman Kuldeep Yadav for five with a straight delivery, sparking a collapse from which India never recovered. Harmer finished with exceptional figures of 6/37, as India were bowled out for 140 in 63.5 overs.
The massive target was never realistically in play, but the manner of India’s defeat will linger in the memories of fans. The Barsapara pitch, one of the best Indian tracks in recent years, offered a fair contest. Batters with solid technique were able to score, pacers who hit their lengths found success, and spinners with craft dominated proceedings.
South Africa’s performance was authoritative across all departments. With this series win, they became the first visiting team to complete multiple Test series whitewashes in India, reinforcing their status as reigning world champions.
