ISLAMABAD: The opposition-led Tehreek Tahaffuz-e-Aain Pakistan has expressed its willingness to hold talks with the government and announced that it is ready to take responsibility for getting a new charter signed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder and former prime minister Imran Khan.

Following Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s conditional offer of talks with the PTI, an important meeting of the opposition alliance was held under the chair of Tehreek Tahaffuz-e-Aain Pakistan chief Mehmood Khan Achakzai.

According to sources, the opposition has agreed to negotiations on transparent elections and the appointment of a new chief election commissioner.

The opposition parties agreed on the need for dialogue to strengthen constitutional and democratic values and on forging a new charter to steer the country out of political and economic crises.

Mehmood Khan Achakzai stressed the restoration of the 1973 Constitution.

The Tehreek Tahaffuz-e-Aain Pakistan also announced that it would take responsibility for getting Imran Khan to sign the new charter.

The meeting declared the opposition’s two-day national conference a success and decided to observe February 8 as “black day” in Pakistan and abroad.

Proposals regarding a strike and street mobilisation were also discussed at the meeting.

It was further decided to form sub-committees to make the “black day” successful, while the announcement of committees at the provincial and district levels is expected soon.

On the prime minister’s invitation for talks, it was agreed in the meeting that parliamentary supremacy, rule of law, and human rights would form part of the new charter.
