The 2025 Game Awards delivered a wave of major announcements, with new trailers and reveals pointing to an ambitious few years ahead for some of gaming’s most recognisable franchises.
While Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 took home the Game of the Year award, much of the conversation centred on world premieres, including long-rumoured projects and bold reinventions. From a new Star Wars role-playing game to Larian Studios’ next major title and a dramatic shift for Control, this year’s showcase leaned heavily into scale, spectacle and nostalgia.
Larian confirms its next big RPG with Divinity
Larian Studios officially unveiled Divinity, confirming its next major project following the success of Baldur’s Gate 3. The cinematic reveal offered little in the way of concrete gameplay details, but was positioned as the studio’s biggest game to date.
The title marks a return to Larian’s own universe rather than a sequel to Baldur’s Gate, with the developer previously making it clear that it was not working on a fourth entry in that series. Studio head Swen Vincke has described the project as larger in scope than Baldur’s Gate 3, although no release window has been announced.
A new Star Wars RPG revives the spirit of Knights of the Old Republic
Another long-anticipated reveal came with the announcement of Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, a new single-player action role-playing game described as a spiritual successor to Knights of the Old Republic.
The game is being developed by Arcanaut Studios, led by former BioWare creative director Casey Hudson. According to the studio, the title will focus on narrative choice, with player decisions shaping a path towards either the light or dark side. While its exact placement within the Star Wars timeline remains unclear, Arcanaut confirmed the project is currently in early development.
Control returns with a major reinvention
Remedy Entertainment also revealed that its follow-up to Control will be titled Control Resonant, signalling a significant shift in direction for the franchise.
Rather than a third-person shooter, the new game is described as an action role-playing experience set in an open-world version of Manhattan. Players will take on the role of Dylan Faden, with the trailer showcasing surreal cityscapes and reality-bending combat. Control Resonant is scheduled for release in 2026.
Horror, strategy and what comes next
Beyond the headline reveals, Frictional Games introduced Ontos, a sci-fi thriller positioned as a spiritual successor to Soma. The game leans into psychological horror and existential themes, with actor Stellan Skarsgård attached, and is expected to launch in 2026.
The showcase also confirmed Total War: Warhammer 40,000, bringing Creative Assembly’s strategy series into Games Workshop’s futuristic universe. The game will feature four playable factions at launch, including Space Marines, Orks, Astra Militarum and Aeldari, with further content expected post-launch. No release date has yet been announced.
Taken together, the Game Awards 2025 highlighted a growing focus on expansive worlds, narrative-driven experiences and familiar franchises being reimagined in bold ways, setting the tone for some of the most anticipated releases of the coming years.
