UFC champion Ilia Topuria breaks silence on extortion plot and false abuse claims

Ilia Topuria

UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria has said he is stepping away from competition after becoming the target of what he describes as an extortion attempt involving false allegations of domestic abuse.

Topuria, who announced in November that he would pause fighting during the first half of 2026, addressed the situation in a public statement on Monday, saying he had been threatened unless financial demands were met. He said the allegations being used against him were “entirely unfounded”.

Topuria says evidence has been submitted to authorities

The undefeated fighter said he has preserved audio recordings, written communications, witness statements and video material, all of which have been submitted to judicial authorities.

According to Topuria, the evidence forms the basis of legal action related to attempted extortion, falsification of evidence, misappropriation of funds and multiple threats.

He said he initially chose to remain silent to protect his family’s privacy, but decided to speak out after what he described as false narratives began to circulate publicly.

“The truth is not a matter of opinion. It is a matter of evidence,” Topuria said, adding that he had full confidence in the judicial process.

UFC confirms champion status during absence

Topuria captured the UFC lightweight title in June with a victory over Charles Oliveira, extending his professional record to 17 wins without defeat. UFC president Dana White has said Topuria will retain his championship status while the matter is addressed.

Topuria said he would not make further public comments until the legal proceedings have concluded.

“Those who know me can attest that I have never engaged in violence of any kind,” he said. “My life and career have always been guided by discipline, respect and integrity.”

It remains unclear when Topuria will return to the octagon.
