WhatsApp’s new draft feature lets users save and return to status edits

WhatsApp is preparing one of its most useful updates for the Status feature in years. The messaging app is developing a “Save as draft” option that will allow users to pause work on a status and return to it later. Currently, the feature is hidden in the app’s code, so it is not yet available to the public.
At the moment, leaving the status editor means losing all progress. Any text, stickers, or image edits disappear, forcing users to start over. The new draft option promises to end this frustration. When creating a status, users will be prompted to save their work, discard it, or continue editing.
Saved drafts will appear the next time the status editor is opened, making it easier to perfect updates before sharing.
The upcoming feature was discovered by Android Authority in WhatsApp version 2.25.36.6 through an APK teardown. It mirrors functionality already available on platforms like Instagram.
WhatsApp is also introducing new creative tools alongside the draft feature. A special animated “2026” sticker with colour options such as green, red, and purple will be available for layout statuses with multiple images. Given its seasonal theme, the sticker is expected to arrive before the new year.
Other recent improvements to Status include AI-generated images and Status Questions. The AI tool allows users to generate images by typing a description, while Status Questions let users add interactive question stickers. WhatsApp has also upgraded the About section, making it easier for contacts to see when someone is available.
With these changes, WhatsApp is aiming to make Status more user-friendly and creative, giving users more control over what they share and how they share it.
