Widespread rains, snowfall expected in country

WEB DESK: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast the onset of a significant western weather system across the country’s upper regions starting today (Saturday) evening, which is expected to bring widespread rain and snowfall over the coming week.

According to the advisory, the system will lead to a notable increase in cold wave conditions from December 30th to 31st. Precipitation activity is likely to continue in various parts of the country from December 31st through January 2nd.

Regional Forecast Breakdown:

  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Rain is expected in Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Kohistan, and Mansehra from December 29th to 31st. Simultaneously, Abbottabad, Buner, and Battagram may experience both rain and snowfall.
  • Northern Punjab & Galyat: Murree, the Galyat region, and surrounding areas are likely to receive rain and snowfall between December 29th and 31st.
  • Gilgit-Baltistan: Rain is forecast for Gilgit, Skardu, Diamer, Astore, Ghizer, Hunza, and Nagar from December 30th to January 2nd.
  • Azad Jammu & Kashmir: The Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, and Bagh are expected to receive rain from December 30th to January 2nd.
  • Balochistan: Quetta, Ziarat, Kalat, Zhob, and Mastung may experience rain during the same period, from December 30th to January 2nd.

Hazards and Public Advisory

The Met Office has issued warnings of potential landslides in hilly areas due to the anticipated rain and snowfall. There is also a possibility of road closures in the upper regions, which could disrupt travel and transportation.

Citizens, especially travellers and those in mountainous areas, are advised to exercise caution, stay updated with official weather bulletins, and plan their movements accordingly during this active weather period.
