Prince William says ‘change is on my agenda’

LONDON: Britain’s Prince William enjoys zipping around the grounds of Windsor Castle on an electric scooter, his children aren’t allowed phones, and he’s ready for “change”, he reveals in a rare interview discussing his future role as king.

“Change is on my agenda – change for good. Not overly radical change, but changes that I think need to happen,” the 43-year-old prince said in a conversation with Hollywood actor Eugene Levy.

“Tradition has a huge part in all of this (royal life), but there are also times when you look at tradition and ask, ‘Is that still fit for purpose today?’” he added.

A trained helicopter pilot and horseman, William surprised Levy by arriving on two wheels when they met at Windsor Castle, west of London.

The prince lives on the sprawling royal estate with his wife, Catherine, Princess of Wales, and their three children: George (12), Charlotte (10), and Louis (7).

He is seen riding through an ancient archway into a castle courtyard, prompting the 78-year-old Canadian actor and comedian to ask if the scooter is his usual way of getting around.

“It is around here,” William replies with a laugh. “It gets around quite nicely… it’s fun.”

The interview, part of Levy’s Apple TV+ travel series The Reluctant Traveler, is one of the most personal Prince William has ever given.

Levy, known for the hit series Schitt’s Creek, is also seen walking with William and his pet cocker spaniel Orla through the scenic royal grounds. The pair even enjoy a pint together at the local pub, The Two Brewers.

‘Hardest Year’

When asked whether Windsor’s deep history feels overwhelming, William admits:

“History can be a real weight and an anchor around you,” but adds that “it’s important to live for the here and now.”

Family matters have also been challenging, and William describes 2024 as the “hardest year” of his life.

Both his wife and father, King Charles III, were diagnosed with cancer in 2024.

“Life is said to test us, and being able to overcome that is what makes us who we are,” he reflected.

Catherine is slowly returning to public life after announcing she is in remission. King Charles is still undergoing treatment.

“When it’s to do with family, that’s when I get a bit overwhelmed – as I think most people would,” William said.

“It’s more personal, it’s more emotional, it upsets the rhythm,” he added, noting how proud he is of both his wife and father for how they have handled their illnesses.

“My children have managed brilliantly as well,” he said.

The prince also revealed that he and Catherine are very strict about screen time: none of their children are allowed phones.

“We sit and chat – it’s really important. None of our children have any phones, which we’re very strict about,” William said.
