TOKYO: Just weeks before bowing out of office, Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is going out in style. Eyewear style, to be exact!

On Wednesday, the 68-year-old Japanese leader was crowned the politician who looks best in glasses, taking home top honors in the political category of the annual “Best Eyewear Dresser” awards. The quirky accolade was presented during a major optical and eyewear industry trade show in Tokyo.

It’s the first time in nearly three decades that a sitting prime minister has won the coveted title, following in the fashionable footsteps of former PM Ryutaro Hashimoto in 1996.

“Sometimes good things happen in life,” Ishiba quipped at the ceremony, calling the honor “unexpected” but clearly enjoying the moment. As cameras clicked, he even tried on a sleek pair of sunglasses, gifted as a supplementary prize.

Ishiba, who recently announced his intention to step down after a politically tough year, revealed that he started wearing glasses during an earlier leadership campaign after being told they’d help soften his image.

“It’s important to make people want to believe in you without being menacing or intimidating,” he explained, suggesting that specs can be political tools as well as fashion statements.

According to the award presenters, Ishiba’s glasses have become something of a signature look, with many in the political world associating his thoughtful frames with his public persona.

Joining Ishiba in the winners’ circle were economist and Yale professor Yusuke Narita, who took home the prize in the economic category, and actor Fumino Kimura, who dazzled in the entertainment division.

Politics may be serious business, but for PM Ishiba, it’s all about looking sharp!
