NDMA warns of heavy rainfall

ISLAMABAD/KARACHI: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has cautioned against heavy rainfall from July 28 to 31 in the country.

“The monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea will enter in upper parts of the country today, which will bring heavy rainfall from July 28 to 31,” the NDMA said in its advisory.

The new monsoon system could cause flash floods in the country.

Under the influence of the weather system upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Galliyat, Murree, Gilgit Baltistan and Kashmir are likely to be lashed by heavy rains with thunderstorms.

Rainfall may cause flash flooding in local nullahs. Hill torrents may trigger in Sulaiman and the Kirthar Ranges. Likewise, hill torrents are likely to trigger in D.G Khan and Rajanpur.

In this regard, the NDMA has issued instructions to all relevant departments to take necessary precautions to mitigate the possible effects of flooding and extreme weather.

Heavy rains cause dam burst in central Russia

The Authority warned that flash floods can strike suddenly, catching people off guard. It advised people to avoid flood waters and find a safe location away from flood-prone areas.

The NDMA asked the people to avoid crossing bridges if water is flowing rapidly and avoid staying in weak structures.

Karachi and other coastal districts of Sindh are experiencing cloudy weather today as light rainfall or drizzle is expected in different areas of the region.

The weather will remain cloudy and humid in the port city during the next 24 hours as maximum temperature could soar to 35 Celsius with 70 percent humidity.

The winds blowing at the speed of 18 kilometer per hours, according to the Met Office.
