GILGIT: A 28-year-old woman died at the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital in Ghizer district of Gilgit-Baltistan on Wednesday night after a nurse allegedly administered the wrong injection, sparking outrage among her family.

According to the victim’s uncle, the woman underwent a C-section at around 11am and gave birth to a healthy baby girl. He said both mother and child were in stable condition, and she was shifted to the ward after the operation.

“She was fully conscious, spoke happily with her husband, father and brothers on the phone, and was overjoyed at the birth of her daughter. Until 5pm, she was breastfeeding the baby and meeting relatives in good health,” he said in a video statement shared on social media.

He said the tragedy unfolded later in the evening when, around 9pm, a nurse injected a “wrong injection”. Quoting the victim’s mother, he said the woman objected as the injection was being administered, complaining of dizziness and urging the nurse not to proceed.

He said within seconds her mouth reportedly swelled and her body stiffened. Doctors attempted to stabilise her condition but, as it worsened, she was rushed back to the operation theatre. Despite nearly two hours of resuscitation efforts, she could not be revived.

Relatives of the deceased and local residents have demanded a transparent and impartial investigation from the Gilgit-Baltistan chief secretary, chief minister, and health secretary, along with strict legal action against the nurse and staff accused of negligence.

Deputy Commissioner Ghizer Habibur Rehman confirmed to HUM News English that he reached the hospital the same night and ordered an inquiry into the incident.

In compliance with the directions of the Ghizer Deputy Commissioner, District Health Officer Dr. Muhammad Tanveer constituted a five-member fact-finding committee under his supervision to probe the matter.

According to a notification issued in this regard, the committee has been tasked with reviewing hospital records, and recording statements of the staff concerned as well as the complainant party. It has been directed to submit a comprehensive report with findings and recommendations to the deputy commissioner within seven days.
