ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Rana Sanaullah, while talking to media, has criticised the Supreme Court’s (SC) latest decision to suspend Review of Judgement and Orders ACT 2023, questioning its timing.
“Elected bodies within the Supreme Court Bar are of the opinion that the court is politicised,” he said.
The former interior minister has also voiced concerns about “tweets being made prior to the decisions of the top court”.
“The SC’s jurisdiction primarily lies in interpreting the constitution, rather than re-writing it,” he complained while stating that, “the drafting of the constitution is the job of the parliament.”
He said that even the SC itself draws its powers of interpretation from the parliament, warning of potential “repercussions” if “the Parliament continues to be disrespected”.
“If this trend persists, perhaps the incoming government might reconsider the SC’s current powers,” Sana said.
The PML-N leader also questioned the timing of SC rulings saying “one can’t help but question” the time at which the decisions come out.
The statements highlight growing tensions between the political party that just left the parliament after passing a plethora of legislations that are termed “hasty” by many, and the superior judiciary.
Earlier, the party’s legal thinking-head and former law minister, Azam Nazeer Tarar said the decision “will not affect Nawaz Sharif’s case”.
