Beijing, (Reuters): Relentless rain since the weekend transformed roads in Beijing into rivers, sweeping away cars and road signs on Monday, as the extreme weather in China‘s capital killed at least two and trapped hundreds at home.

Social media posts showed floating cars and road signs in Mentougou district being pulled along by fast-moving torrents as the remnants of Typhoon Doksuri dumped record rainfall on the city of nearly 22 million. Reuters was able to confirm the location of the videos from the nearby buildings which matched maps and file images of the area.

Hundreds of roads have become flooded in Beijing and local authorities posted statements on WeChat saying there were several other emergencies such as landslides and small-scale flash floods in the Mentougou and Fangshan districts.

While Doksuri continues to taper off, forecasters warned that typhoon Khanun was approaching and was set to strike China‘s densely populated coast this week.
